Moon Magic: New Moon in Pisces

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology. I share some of what I am discovering here, along with a bit of magic.

I have been lax in writing posts for the past couple of weeks. For the first week I was trying to catch up on other work, then last week Ukraine was invaded, and I felt like I had nothing to say. How could I possibly share what was happening for me, someone too small to have any influence on the world around me? It was quite a shock to my system, after feeling lit up by the Full Moon in Leo, as I mused on in my last post.

Today’s New Moon in Pisces has been playing with my emotions, and my sense of time and place. I had one of those shower moments when I was so lost in thought I forgot what I was meant to do while I stood under the water. I am also having trouble keeping track of which day of the week it is and have noticed others are affected as well. These moments of disconnect are Pisces at play, when the edges are blurred between realms, and we are caught in the mystical in between space.

So how should I work with that wobbly, dreamy energy while very real horrors are happening?

In addition to the grounded, concrete actions one can take now, such as talking to my representatives (we all need to make sure they hear from us more) and supporting legitimate organizations providing aid to the people and animals of Ukraine, magic calls me to its work.

One of the first things I learned as a newbie practitioner was how to shield. I have been working with my protective energy bubble for decades and have placed similar shields on my house and car. The intention of those shields is to keep me safe and filter out negativity. Not long ago I adapted my shielding ritual to protect wolves. Could I do the same for a country?

I checked in with the Earth and the Nature Spirits this morning as I sat outside for meditation and got a clear “yes.” I was shown how to use my roots, both to connect in with my own circle of support and to transmit energy and intention through the Earth herself to feed a bubble of protection around Ukraine. In the past I have powered my shields with cosmic light, so reaching below and working with the Earth in this way was new.

As I continue to deepen with this revelation, I hope you will also ask Spirit how you might help manifest peace. Yes, world peace is a dream, but there is no better time than when the Moon is in Pisces to float into the realm of dreams and bring one back with you.

May peace and love prevail.

Moon Magic: Full Moon in Leo

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology. I share some of what I am discovering here, along with a bit of magic.

When the Moon is full, she is in opposition to the Sun. Reflected sunlight illuminates the dark of night enough to cast shadows. The Full Moon marks the beginning of the time of culmination and completion when the results of actions taken during the waxing phases manifest results.

Tomorrow’s Full Moon is in Leo, the fixed Fire sign and ruled by the Sun. The archetypal energy of the Full Moon in Leo is the Ruler who, influenced by Leo’s tendency to seek spotlights, tends to show up in today’s world not as a real leader but rather someone who plays one on TV. While we need to shine a light on who we are giving power to, there is something to be said for acting as if you were a leader when you are called into that role.

When the Moon is in Leo you might desire attention, have a burst of creativity, or feel more confident than usual. While researching the astrology, I saw, more than once, a warning that the Full Moon in Leo can make you vain and it is a good time to check in with your humility. Well, f*ck that.

Too often up-and-coming leaders, especially women leaders, are called “attention whores,” “drama queens,” or overconfident. Yeah, the Full Moon in Leo might have you spreading your message with theatrics (maybe even interpretive dance) but you have important things to share and you should be heard. If this Moon phase has you feeling bold, put that to work and light up the sky, my friend! Show us all the muck of society that has been hidden in the darkness.

If you are not quite ready to shine, practice the magic of radiance. In a relaxed, meditative state, imagine a column of white light from the sky flowing into your big toe and lighting it up. Then spread the light into all five toes, your foot, your ankle, and up your leg. Flow the light across your pelvis and down the other leg all the way to those toes. Then bring the light into your abdomen, your chest, and your shoulders. Flow the light down one arm to your fingertips, then the other. Draw the light up your neck and into your head, so your entire body is filled with white light. Then become radiant, sensing the light shining all around you. End the practice when you are ready but hold onto the knowledge that you are a brilliant being.

Moon Magic: Second Quarter Moon in Taurus

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I have recently begun to look at the Quarter Moons as well. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology. I share some of what I am discovering here, along with a bit of magic.

When the Moon is half-full at the start of the second quarter, things that were set in motion with your New Moon intentions begin to gain momentum. The luminaries – the Sun and the Moon – are in a square aspect, which indicates tension between them. That tension can be channeled into your endeavors if you adjust and act.

The tricky bit is the Moon is in Taurus and you might be desiring your comfort zone. The stubborn bull is not in a hurry to change anything, especially if it means risking material comforts. If your New Moon intentions included building financial security or attracting abundance, however, Taurus will be more than happy to give you a push.

I was born under a Taurus Moon, so you would think I would be more in touch with my finances, but they have always created struggle for me. It may be because the Moon was waning then, creating different energy. Money magic never seemed to work, until I tried one that made all the difference. I am not sure where the idea came from, but it was not originally mine.

Put a jar on your altar or in another revered place and put some money in it. If you are really broke, like I was when I first did this, you might only be able to come up with one dollar. That is okay! Put the money in the jar and say, “Thank you. More please.” Then, every time money comes into your life unexpectedly, even if is a quarter you found in your pocket, put it in the jar and say, “Thank you. More please.” It may take some time, but when you work with both gratitude and the willingness to ask for what you want, money begins to flow. Leave the money in your jar until it is full or you have all you desire, then put it to use.

Instead of the jar, I use the process to check my bank balance every morning. No matter how much is in there, I write the balance in my day planner and label it “abundance.” Then I say, “Thank you. More please.” Any unexpected money that comes my way goes into that account. I have gotten through some tough times with that magic.

Moon Magic: New Moon in Aquarius

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology. I share some of what I am discovering here, along with a bit of magic.

The theme I worked with for today’s New Moon in Aquarius is “rebel with a cause.” More than any past year, I am feeling a growing discontent with societal norms and an almost equal resistance to change. In the United States, which will experience its Pluto return later this month, the tension between the two feels oppressive.

The recent loss of two great rebels, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Thich Nhat Hanh, has me wondering who will lead us forward now. There are many who are “in charge” of things, but few who lead as they did with compassion and love when those qualities are so needed. Perhaps it is you. Today’s moon might help you see that.

Aquarius is an air sign, which might dampen the influence of the emotional moon, but concern for the group can drive pragmatic humanitarian action even if your heart stays home. While you are in your head, consider the circles you fit in with. What are the common ideals? What values does the group no longer align with but have been allowed to stand? What intentions can you set to change things for the better?

My go-to for spell work is my journal, and this thought-focused New Moon is an ideal time to do some writing magic. To get started, create a sacred space, which can be as simple as lighting a candle if you do so with intention. Then, in your journal, write about what is no longer serving the common good. List everything you desire to release from societal norms. When you have written as many as you can think of, turn the page and write about what would be better. What is your vision for an evolved humanity? When you are complete, sit for a moment, then read through your vision for a better world. Read it again, as if you were reading a news report – nothing but the facts. Read it one more time, and believe it is true. Close with gratitude for your sacred space.

Moon Magic: Fourth Quarter Moon in Scorpio

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology and share some of what I am discovering here.

In two days, the Moon enters the fourth quarter phase while she is in Scorpio. While the increasing light of the Waxing Quarter Moon can channel the tension of Sun square Moon into action, the Moon’s waning light now shifts the tension of the square to restriction and disintegration. Challenges and delays tend to be externally imposed, such as those from society or natural law.

The Moon in the fixed water sign of Scorpio brings an intensity to emotions that may be hard to escape from. The tension the Moon feels in the Fourth Quarter may trigger over-reactions to every little thing. Scorpio is co-ruled by Mars and Pluto, but I believe Pluto will dominate under the darkening Moon and trigger a retreat. It is okay to seek solitude and regroup now, to get ready for the next New Moon.

The United States will have its Pluto return during 2022, beginning in February. That may mean big, transformational institutional shake-ups. The Fourth Quarter Moon in Scorpio feels like it is telling us to take a big inhale and hold it. Take advantage of this time to find space for what is coming.

Moon Magic: Full Moon in Cancer

Today’s Full Moon is in Cancer, barely. A few hours after the Moon is full she will drift into Leo. Until then, though, the Moon is in the sign she rules and all of Cancer’s watery, emotional energy will be amplified. You may desire emotional support and comfort today.

The Moon is full when she is opposite the Sun. Planets in opposition are energetically at odds. The Sun in Capricorn wants to be organized and practical and can be unsympathetic to your emotional state today. The Moon is also opposite Pluto, activating power and control issues. I feel that the theme of the day is, “Crying won’t get you anywhere.”

The thing is, I am tired of hearing that my emotions do not matter to the people in charge. Stop telling me that I should stick to the science and think about the economy and human convenience when my heart says that land or that species is worth protecting. We should not ignore the science, nor should we ignore our hearts.

My take on the Moon’s energy today is a call to lead from your heart. Find a like-hearted community who can hold you in grief or anger or whatever comes up for you, then, with their support, tell the world why you care. Let the Full Moon in Cancer validate everything you feel.

Moon Magic: First Quarter in Aries

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology. I thought I would share some of what I am discovering here.

first quarter moon

Image by Mark Underwood from Pixabay

Today is the First Quarter Moon. In the sky, half of the Moon is visible. The Moon is waxing, and at this halfway point things are beginning to gain momentum. The Moon is in a square aspect to the Sun, which creates tension with whatever sign the Sun is in. If it can be worked with, that tension can lead to growth and progress.

The First Quarter Moon is not a phase for contemplation. The time for setting intentions and making plans has passed. It is time to make decisions and act.

Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac cycle and the cardinal sign of spring, is ready for what is new to come into being and will breathe life into it. Aries is a fire element sign which, when influencing the emotional Moon, can make you feel irritable or argumentative. You may act more impulsively than usual, but that boldness can be just what you need to get things started.

The Sun is in Capricorn, the cardinal earth element sign that starts winter. The tension in this square is between the Aries Moon feeling ready to get new things going and the Sun in his planning phase in Capricorn. I think the Aries energy can flair up as anger when frustrated by Capricorn’s slow and steady approach. Collectively, it reminds me of what we are seeing here in the United States as progressives lash out against conservatives who are holding back the social and environmental changes we need. I will be watching for a flare up today.

Luckily the Moon’s phases do not last long. If you are feeling the Aries irritation, breathe and practice your anger management skills.
