Moon Magic: New Moon in Pisces

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology. I share some of what I am discovering here, along with a bit of magic.

I have been lax in writing posts for the past couple of weeks. For the first week I was trying to catch up on other work, then last week Ukraine was invaded, and I felt like I had nothing to say. How could I possibly share what was happening for me, someone too small to have any influence on the world around me? It was quite a shock to my system, after feeling lit up by the Full Moon in Leo, as I mused on in my last post.

Today’s New Moon in Pisces has been playing with my emotions, and my sense of time and place. I had one of those shower moments when I was so lost in thought I forgot what I was meant to do while I stood under the water. I am also having trouble keeping track of which day of the week it is and have noticed others are affected as well. These moments of disconnect are Pisces at play, when the edges are blurred between realms, and we are caught in the mystical in between space.

So how should I work with that wobbly, dreamy energy while very real horrors are happening?

In addition to the grounded, concrete actions one can take now, such as talking to my representatives (we all need to make sure they hear from us more) and supporting legitimate organizations providing aid to the people and animals of Ukraine, magic calls me to its work.

One of the first things I learned as a newbie practitioner was how to shield. I have been working with my protective energy bubble for decades and have placed similar shields on my house and car. The intention of those shields is to keep me safe and filter out negativity. Not long ago I adapted my shielding ritual to protect wolves. Could I do the same for a country?

I checked in with the Earth and the Nature Spirits this morning as I sat outside for meditation and got a clear “yes.” I was shown how to use my roots, both to connect in with my own circle of support and to transmit energy and intention through the Earth herself to feed a bubble of protection around Ukraine. In the past I have powered my shields with cosmic light, so reaching below and working with the Earth in this way was new.

As I continue to deepen with this revelation, I hope you will also ask Spirit how you might help manifest peace. Yes, world peace is a dream, but there is no better time than when the Moon is in Pisces to float into the realm of dreams and bring one back with you.

May peace and love prevail.

Moon Magic: New Moon in Aquarius

Each New and Full Moon I dig into lunar astrology to write my newsletter and to set the theme for the associated Turtle Journey. I am not an astrologer, but I have enjoyed learning about this one aspect of astrology. I share some of what I am discovering here, along with a bit of magic.

The theme I worked with for today’s New Moon in Aquarius is “rebel with a cause.” More than any past year, I am feeling a growing discontent with societal norms and an almost equal resistance to change. In the United States, which will experience its Pluto return later this month, the tension between the two feels oppressive.

The recent loss of two great rebels, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Thich Nhat Hanh, has me wondering who will lead us forward now. There are many who are “in charge” of things, but few who lead as they did with compassion and love when those qualities are so needed. Perhaps it is you. Today’s moon might help you see that.

Aquarius is an air sign, which might dampen the influence of the emotional moon, but concern for the group can drive pragmatic humanitarian action even if your heart stays home. While you are in your head, consider the circles you fit in with. What are the common ideals? What values does the group no longer align with but have been allowed to stand? What intentions can you set to change things for the better?

My go-to for spell work is my journal, and this thought-focused New Moon is an ideal time to do some writing magic. To get started, create a sacred space, which can be as simple as lighting a candle if you do so with intention. Then, in your journal, write about what is no longer serving the common good. List everything you desire to release from societal norms. When you have written as many as you can think of, turn the page and write about what would be better. What is your vision for an evolved humanity? When you are complete, sit for a moment, then read through your vision for a better world. Read it again, as if you were reading a news report – nothing but the facts. Read it one more time, and believe it is true. Close with gratitude for your sacred space.

Breathe in Moonlight

Since we began having new moon circles at the True North Yoga studio, I’ve been reconnecting to the lunar cycle. I’ve always noticed the moon in the sky, when it’s visible, but I went through a period of not noticing mindfully. Over the past couple of years I’d forgotten how the moon speaks to my spirit and I’m glad to feel it’s pull again.

During the last full moon I was guiding a yoga class into deeper breathing when I was struck by how the moon’s cycle mirrors the cycle of the breath.

Try this:

Sit comfortably and lengthen your spine. Breathe in and out through your nose. Make each breath a bit deeper, a bit longer, until you are using all of your lungs.

Notice your inhale. Notice how the lungs fill slowly, taking in more and more air until they are full. The inhale is like the waxing moon, growing from a sliver in the sky to an orb.

Pause at the top of your inhale, holding your breath in gently. This pause, with your lungs at their full capacity, is like the full moon hanging in the sky for a night. Savor it’s power and sweetness as your body takes in oxygen.

Slowly exhale, noticing the emptying of your lungs. The exhale is like the waning moon, gradually releasing all of it’s energy and light as it shrinks to a crescent.

For a brief moment, pause at the bottom of your exhale. Notice the emptiness, like the lack of light in the night sky during the new moon. Be aware that the emptiness is ready to be refilled, and with an inhale begin the cycle again.

At our new moon circles we revel in the emptiness, for the moonless night signifies a readiness to begin. It is the time of potential unmanifest. When the moon is new on March 11, pause for a brief moment and invite in all that you are ready to create in your life.

And when the moon is full, breathe in moonlight and savor the sweetness of your creative power.
