Guiding Principles of Ecological Reiki

By June 28, 2026No Comments

Are you ready to take your energy practice of the table and onto the Earth? Consider these principles for practicing Reiki with your ecosystem (and just living an interconnected life).

Question your worldview. Most of us, especially descendants of white Europeans, were taught that humans are separate from the rest of nature and nature is a resource to be extracted and exploited. When your Reiki practice expands beyond humans, you will have experiences with other forms of life that challenge the idea of separation. Be willing to examine the dominant worldview and question your own, and let what is revealed evolve your thinking about the worth and meaning of all beings and how you fit into the complex web of ecological relationships.

Go deep. Everyone comes to this work with wounds, doubts, fears, and biases. As your worldview shifts, confront aspects of yourself, past actions, or held beliefs that are misaligned with your new sense of self. Trust yourself to meet whatever arises with grace and know that Earth supports you as you bring yourself into alignment.

Listen to the land. Unfortunately, most of what you have learned about how to interact with and steward the land is based on the misguided notion that humans are in control and the land should be altered to satisfy human desires above all else. When you practice Reiki on another human, ethics demand that you let your client direct the intention and format of your work. When you practice ecological Reiki, your “clients” are the land and the ecosystem, so let them state the intention for the energy and for your actions.

Respect all beings. Humans tend to value some forms of life over others. Those we value most usually serve us in some way, such as being companions, providing food, or helping us get around, or they are species we have been told have symbolic meaning or ecological importance. Really, every being of every species has its own inherent value. As you approach any being or an ecosystem for energy work, set aside your personal likes and dislikes of certain forms of life, and respect and honor the inherent worth of all beings.

Commit to small actions. I wish that every human who reads this would band together, march to the seats of power, and demand a better life for all beings, and maybe some of you will do just that. I know, though, that direct action is not how many of us are called to serve. You can be an ecological caregivers by quietly tending to ecosystems and species in need without fanfare or news coverage. If joining a rally is not your thing, plant a pollinator garden or reduce how much single use plastic you buy. Small actions make a difference.

Love. When you decide to take on the work of ecological Reiki, set one powerful, overarching intention to love every being and every place. Love is your most potent guide. If you feel like you cannot do anything else to help a situation, love it. Love everyone involved, even humans whose interests do not align with yours. Love so much, there is no room for hate.
